Did you know that aquatic (water) therapy can benefit
everyone? Some of the best athletes in the world use water as a
means to continue an exercise program when they are hurt. People
with all sorts of diagnosis and ailments can benefit.
There are many ways to exercise in the water. You can
swim for the endurance and cardiovascular benefit. You can use
weights to improve upper and lower body strength, as well as use the steps
to progress to more weight bearing exercises. And best of all, you
can MOVE. This helps your overall mobility.
Some who can
benefit from aquatic therapy are those with arthritis, degenerative
joint and disc disease, obesity, fractures, low back pain, those who are
post surgery, and others.
Water can decrease
the stress on your joints by as much as 75%, when you are chest level, 50%
waist level and 25% knee level. This is great because even those of
you that have the most severe pain are able to unload your joints and
still exercise them!. Our bodies are more buoyant in the water
meaning that it takes less energy to keep them afloat. So you can swim and not have to work so hard at staying afloat.
Exercising 2-3
times a week in the water for 45 minutes to one hour can help
significantly with your quality of life. It may become easier for
you to get out of a car, out of bed or out of a chair, go up and down
stairs easier or return to your sport quicker. If you belong to a
gym that has a pool, try exercising in it once or twice a week to
diversify your routine.
